Joel L. Broussard practices intellectual property law, focusing on patent prosecution and litigation in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological fields.
At Berkeley Law (Boalt Hall), Joel held an Editorial Board position on the Berkeley Technology Law Journal and worked as a research assistant for an intellectual property law professor. He also assisted startup clients with corporate law, employment law, intellectual property law, and administrative law issues in Berkeley's New Business Counseling Practicum.
Before law school, Joel held serveral positions in pharmaceuticals/biotechnology. He worked as a researcher at a startup investigating chemical adhesives for use in medical applications. Joel prepared scientific manuscripts in the fields of organic chemistry, catalysis, polymer chemistry, material science, inorganic chemistry, and nano-technology for publication in English-language journals. Joel was employed in a regulatory position at a vaccine company, where he ensured company systems were validated in accordance with United States and European law. Finally, Joel prepared active pharmaecutical ingredients under current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) at a large contract manufacturer.
Joel earned his M.S. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin -- Madison, Organic Chemistry Department, where he researched new methods of carbon-nitrogen bond formation using palladium (II) catalysts and oxygen as the stoichiometric oxidant. He also conducted synthetic organic chemistry research related to anti-viral compounds during his undergraduate studies.
