Casey D. Donahoe, Ph.D.

Dr. Casey Donahoe practices intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent prosecution and strategy in the biotechnology, life sciences, and medical devices fields. 

While attending Washington University School of Law, Dr. Donahoe served as an editor for the Washington University Law Review and volunteered with the Office of Technology Management in commercializing university-owned intelletual property.

Dr. Donahoe earned his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, also from Washington University in St. Louis. There his research combined chemistry, biology, and engineering in developing polymeric biomaterials with ultra-low protein adsorption properties for applications in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Specifically, he worked on creating porous hydrogel scaffolds and high density nanogel coatings employed in applications such as vascularization of engineered tissue constructs, stem cell culture and differentiation, blood-compatible cardiovascular implants, drug delivery vehicles, and low-background diagnostic imaging. His broad scientific background, with an education encompassing the life sciences as well as traditional fields of engineering, including mechanical and electrical engineering, make him a highly versatile patent practitioner. 

Prior to graduate school, Dr. Donahoe worked as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, evaluating patents in the fields of dentistry, orthodontics, cosmetics, and retractors. His experience in that position provided him unique insight into what can make the difference between a patent application's final rejection or its allowance.

Dr. Donahoe joined the firm in 2016.
